ANTIBIOTICS & 5 Reasons We Need Probiotics #HealthHacks

HEALTH ISSUES THAT MAY RESPOND TO PROBIOTICS:

“My stomach hurts when I eat and I don’t know why!”

“I had antibiotics and now I’m constipated.”

“I had antibiotics and now I have diarrhea.”

REASONS WE NEED PROBIOTICS:

1.) Because antibiotics. 🙂  Antibiotics destroy the beneficial bacteria or healthy flora that normally inhabits our digestive tract and can allow “bad” bacteria to grow.                                 Hospitals may  now consider probiotics as a cost-effective treatment when C-Dif grows too much after antibiotics1.

2.)  This good bacteria makes B vitamins2 and in combination with vitamin k has potential to have an antiproliferative effect on colon adenocarcinoma3.

3.)  Beneficial bacteria regulates whether we have constipation or diarrhea – even diarrhea caused by C-Dif4 and have even been found “promising” to help with inflammatory bowel disease.  The following abstract recommends specific strains that were found effective to some degree in medical literature.5

4.) Healthy gut flora keeps us slim.  A double-blind study found that a particular strain of  lactobacillus rhamnosus was shown to lower the weight of obese men and women6.

5.) Probiotics are said to be our “second brain” because they even affect how we think.  Dr.             Perlmutter says it is more accurate to call gut flora our “first brain”! (from Brain Maker: The Power of Gut Microbes to Heal and Protect Your Brain – For Life )

Beneficial bacteria is all around us.  We even have bad bacteria that lives in our intestinal tract that doesn’t cause a problem for us until it grows over a certain percentage.  This time of the year, sugar in seasonal goodies may cause a candida overgrowth and UTIs 7.  A bonus reason to consider probiotics!  For my favorite #probiotic reset, see our  resources page.

Lemon Balm, Melissa Officinalis #HealthHacks to calm a child with a cold

As our children were growing I read a wonderful book on how to handle children’s ailments singing the praises of Lemon Balm or Melissa Officinalis (aka: Bee Balm as the greek word for bee, I am told, sounds much like melissa). Lemon Balm makes a light, fresh, delicious tea that even children will drink! It has relaxing qualities. #Lemon Balm Tea is helpful in getting a fussy child to relax and maybe even sleep. There is a lot of research on Lemon Balm on PubMed for use with hyperactivity, impulsiveness and to help with concentration1 (I think I need some tea;-))

Lemon Balm even has some research as an antiviral and has on benefits with acyclover resistant bacteria2

You may want to take a minute to search the Pub Med site for more uses of Lemon Balm.

The Extract may be used by putting drops into hot water (the alcohol will dissipate in the steam):

Ignorance is Bliss?!

I ran into a dear friend of mine at Trader Joe’s today.  We hadn’t seen each other in a year and had so much to catch up on!  Her daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in January.  The doctor immediately put her on four insulin shots per day in an effort to control her high blood sugar.  No diet suggestions were given ~ the party for families with diabetes served Diet Coke and Pizza!

The Mom stayed up late nights on a massive search for truth to help her daughter overcome this diagnosis.   Two months later, the MD downloaded the results from her daughter’s Blood Sugar Monitor and was amazed at the results!  The new diet she had put their whole family on had reduced her daughter’s need for insulin from four shots per day to only one!!

Did the Doctor ask what she had done to have such a tremendous difference in her health in such a short time?  NO!!  He just told her to, “Keep cooking what you are cooking!”

Another dear friend was diagnosed with Cancer recently.  She was recommended to a surgeon who recommended that her ovaries be immediately removed to control the high estrogen levels that might be contributing to the cancer.  When she asked him about the side effects and how it would affect the way she would live afterwards he said, “Don’t worry about it, just get it taken care of right away!”

I have to believe that these Doctors are not malicious ~ they are taught not to inquire about what works.  Then they honestly don’t know that there is another way…

Red Mites on Tomatillos

This morning I saw little red dots all over the leaves of my one tomatillo plant. Up until this point it was gorgeous and amazingly green ~ having followed a crop of peas that must have fixed nitrogen well for the tomatillo.
The red mites left their damage by making a few leaves look more white than green. Upon closer inspection, the white almost looked like a webbing.
Research revealed the white was the damage the red mites leave behind ~ one site recommended destroying the plant! I tried three times to start tomatillos from seed this year. I am not sure why only this one plant in the third batch survived, but destroying it was not an option!
Further research revealed that red mites thrive in very dry environments ~ and can be drowned with sufficient water.
A short hose covered the South side of the plant revealing no red mites(!) during the evening inspection.
I also watered deeply and sprayed the tomatillo plant again in the middle of the hot day.

The Tomatillo plant ended up producing a few large harvests very late in the season!

ONE BIG SECRET TO A HEALTHY LIFE

Get Slim, Prevent Cancer, and Elevate your Mood!

Close to six years ago I began to feel funny ~ as though I could feel the blood running through my veins.  It was very uncomfortable and I found out I had High Blood Pressure.  Now I don’t believe in taking drugs, so my options were limited.  It led me to a great discovery!  Something that prevents Cancer and other common diseases, elevates my mood, keeps me slim and energetic ~  yes, you guessed it… Exercise!

Over the years I had always done some exercise, but never consistently, three + times per week.  Now I was determined, but it had to be fun… I found Dance, Dance, Revolution (DDR).  It is fun, you can increase the intensity gradually and DDR is always putting together new games to keep it interesting!  Originally we purchased an X-Box just for the purpose of my exercising 15 minutes every morning.  Now we have the version for the wii ~ I highly recommend it 🙂

OK., now if you want the research behind the outrageous claims above, check out the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) study of 20 years of research.  They determined the top 10 things you can do to prevent cancer.  The most amazing part of what they found is that 9/10 things are totally within your control!  See more AICR Recommendations to Prevent Cancer by clicking on PREVENT CANCER.
